I survived!

I just finished my last exam for the week this morning! I am so relieved! So, my first exam was on Monday (Genetics lab midterm) and I actually did very well! I took the exam Monday night and I had lab yesterday and my professor already had the exams graded! I was really surprised he had them ready for us so soon….and I got a B!! Yay! Oh, but the worse thing happened while taking my Genetics lab midterm……my cell phone starts ringing right in the middle of the exam! I thought I put it on silent right before getting there but obviously I didn’t. My ringtone was really loud and it was playing one of my favorite Spanish songs, hehe. I thought I was going to get in trouble but my professor was nice about it. I remember that in some of my previous chemistry classes, if the cell phone starts ringing the professor will take off points from your exam but luckily that didn’t happen. It was actually my mom who was calling to wish me luck on my exam. Isn’t that sweet?! Now I will always double check to make sure my cell phone is on silent mode before an exam!

I took my Art history exam yesterday and I feel really good about it. Studying for that exam is crazy though because there are so many facts I have to memorize about so many art pieces! Anyways, today I took my physics exam. The exam was a lot easier than I expected, so that’s a good thing! I will probably get my scores back sometime next week. I worked so hard to prepare for these exams which is why I am absolutely exhausted right now. I literally had around 10 hours of sleep these past three nights!

I’m really excited because my friend and I are going to go see “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” tomorrow night in Lecture Hall 1. I heard it’s really funny and I absolutely love Kevin James, he’s hilarious in The King of Queens. Anyways, I’m glad exams are over…..at least until next week! Oh and by the way, HAPPY HALLOWEEN everyone!

10/29-11/2 is going to be one LONG week

I have three big exams this coming week and the worse thing is that I have them on consecutive days. I have my Genetics lab midterm tomorrow, my Art History exam on Tuesday and my Physics exam on Wednesday. I am seriously not going to have a life for the next few days; the library will be my home for now on. Art History shouldn’t be that bad, I just have to review artwork from the Greek and Roman periods. The first exam was pretty easy, just a lot of fill in the blanks and a short essay. Now I have to study a lot for my Genetics lab and Physics exams. I’ve started studying for both but have a lot more to do. So, I won’t be getting much sleep this week either : (  Wish me luck! I’ll let you know how they went on a later post.

Advanced Registration….

I can’t believe it’s almost time to register for Spring 2008 classes! I just found out that my registration day is November 15th….so soon! So, I already have an idea of what classes I want to take next semester. I was kind of productive over the summer and planned out the rest of my semesters until I graduate. Hehe, I’m such a dork! Anyways, I plan to take Phys 112 (Basic Physics II), Biol 305 (Comparative Animal Physiology), Chem 352 (Organic Chemistry II – I’m not really looking forward to this one), a PE class, and a Spanish class (probably Span 308 – Latinoamerica y sus culturas). I just need to take one more Spanish class and then I have completed my minor! Yay!

Now I have to make an appointment with my advisor to get my registration clearance and to talk to her about my options. I’m really stressing out about what I’m going to do after I graduate from UMBC. I’ve always wanted to be a pediatrician but the process to get into medical school is so intense. I’m really worried about the MCATs and if I even have a chance in being a competitive applicant. This is why I am thinking about a back-up plan, just in case I don’t get into medical school……I plan to also apply to physician assistant programs. They have many great programs throughout the states and I have a better chance of getting into this program. Honestly, I would be happy either way. All I really want to do is have a career in the medical field, whether it be a doctor or a physician assistant. I also want to take advantage of my bilingual skills to help out Spanish-speaking patients.  I hope everything turns out for the best!!

UMBC Talent Show

I just came back from the talent show and it was awesome! The performances were really good this year! I liked the dancing group that performed. I forget their name but their dance moves were great! : ) Oh and I ended up gettting a free- t-shirt!

On another note, I’m really excited because I get to go to my aunt’s house tomorrow, well technically later today. She just came back from Peru. She was there for a month; I’m so jealous! Anyways I finally get to eat a home-cooked meal!!  I mean, the food on-campus isn’t bad. I like it a lot but sometimes it’s nice to eat food from home…..yay for peruvian food!

It’s Homecoming time!

Hey everyone! So I just got out of work. I did a lot of filing today and answered some phone calls but I don’t mind. I love working at UHS (University Health Services)! I’m so happy today is Friday! I had a busy week; I took a bio exam on Tuesday and I think I did well and I just had a physics quiz today that went vey well. After such a hard week, I seriously needed to do something fun so my friends and I went to the bonfire last night. Yesterday was the first day of UMBC’s Homecoming celebration. I had lots of fun yesterday! I got to see the bonfire, eat good food and watch Transformers on Erickson field. I wasn’t able to go to the bonfire last year because I had a big exam the next day but I’m glad I was able to go this year. The BBQ was really good! I ate what I thought was a hamburger at first but was in reality a veggie burger…… I never thought I would like it but it was actually really good! Anyways, Transformers is such an awesome movie and it was nice seeing it on the big screen outside.

Today there is going to be ice cream and the student talent show so I’ll probably go to that later tonight. I love Homecoming weekend because there are so many activities going on around campus!

I ♥ Downtown Baltimore!

Downtown Baltimore is such a great place to visit and the best thing is that it’s so close to campus! There are even UMBC shuttle buses that can take you there over the weekends. I especially love the Inner Harbor….such a gorgeous place. I remember the first time I went to the Inner Harbor (I think it was the summer between my sophomore and junior year of high school) and I fell in love with it. It has such cute shops, a lot of souvenir shops (I can tell that Baltimore is really into crabs because I see them on almost all the souvenirs at the stores) and great restaurants like Chipotle (I’m addicted to this place, haha). It’s such a fun place. I love the taxi boats (Is that what you call them?) that take you around the harbor, so much fun! Also, how can forget the aquarium? Oh, and the best part about downtown Baltimore, at least for me, is the fact that there are a few Peruvian restaurants there! I went to one a few weeks ago and it had the best chicken ever!

Anyways, I’m planning to go back sometime soon, probably next weekend. I haven’t been there for months, so sad! I haven’t had time lately because I’ve been really busy with school. I can’t wait!

Being an out-of-state student….

So most of you are probably wondering, why UMBC? It’s funny because whenever I tell someone I’m from California the first words that usually come out are: “Then why are you here?” There are many reasons why I decided to attend UMBC. One thing is that I wanted a change in my life. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sacramento. It’s a great city but I have been living there my whole life and felt that I needed to experience something completely different. My aunt and cousins lives here in Baltimore and told me about UMBC. I took a tour of the campus during the summer of my senior year in high school and loved it! UMBC is the perfect size. It’s not too big, and not too small. Also, it offers many opportunities for Pre-med students. The universities in California are great but they are just not for me. They are too big for my liking and to be honest, are way too expensive for me.  I was very happy when I was accepted to UMBC. I don’t regret my decision and am very happy with my new life in Maryland. I am lucky to have good friends and family close by. I do get home-sick once in a while but I talk to my family in California constantly and I go there during every break. You know what else is awesome about Baltimore? The snow!!! : ) It never snows in Sacramento, so I love the winters here! It’s funny how I get so excited when it snows and my friends look at me like I’m some kind of weirdo because they’ve seen snow millions of times. Anyways, this has been a very different experience for me living in a new state but I am loving every minute of it.

Oh, and here is some random news…….. I am now a UMBC Ambassador! I’m so excited. So I will most likely meet some of you prospective students during UMBC visit days!

It’s finally Saturday!!

I’m so glad the weekend is here. I got to sleep in today which is something I really needed. I barely get any sleep on the weekdays. Now I get to look forward to more studying this weekend! Yay! (sarcasm, just in case you didn’t realize it. haha ) I get most of my studying done in the library. I like it because they have the “Quiet floors”, when I really need to concentrate, and they have really nice computer labs. The quiet floors are nice, each with study rooms that you can use, tables and my favorite are the big comfy sofa chairs they have on each floor.

Later tonight my friends and I are probably going to catch the SEB (Student Events Board) weekly movie. They’re showing “Evan Almighty” this weekend! It’s awesome because they show movies every week in Lecture Hall 1 and it’s only $1 to get in and with free popcorn! What’s better than that? It’s always nice to take a break from all the studying. I like the fact that UMBC always has a lot of cool activities available during the weekends as well. There’s always something to do. Since I used to cummute the past 2 years, I wouldn’t be on campus for too long on the weekends. This semster, I would sometimes go to my aunt’s house but I definitely like staying here on the weekends.

Hola!

Well, this is my first post. Yay! Let me introduce myself….My name is Gaby Galindo and I am from Sacramento, CA. I know, I’m pretty far away from home but it’s been great living in Maryland so far. I am a junior and am majoring in Biology and minoring in Spanish. I hope to get into medical school to become a pediatrician or go into the physician assistant program after graduating from UMBC.

This is my first semester living on campus, which is awesome! It is so nice not having to wake up earlier to give me enough time to find parking. Commuting wasn’t that bad though considering I used to live 5 minutes away! This semester I am working at the University Health Services on campus. I help out at the front desk….answer phones, make appointments, file charts (it’s really a great job). Anyways, I’ll be posting often so you can all read more about me and my life at UMBC! Hasta luego….. : )
